Discovering the Double Silo Farmhouse: A Cozy Rural Haven with a Touch of History

Rustic Charm and Histories

Nestled in the heart of Teton Valley’s picturesque farmland, stands the Farmhouse—cute as a button and steeped in history. Originally crafted in the 1940s by Burton Kunz, a dairy farmer, following his father Samuel Kunz’s footsteps. Samuel is the original Kunz, he homesteaded this property and built his original log cabin on the site where our garage (Pete’s woodworking shop) currently stands. Burton’s son Larell Kunz lives next door, and we love hearing his stories of growing up in the farmhouse and in Teton Valley.

Nature Surrounds

Surrounded by nature, the farmhouse is perfectly situated. To the south, fields of wheat sway in the breeze – home to Sandhill Cranes . A mile to the east, the Teton River. To the west, the Big Hole National Forest beckons with adventure. To the north, a tree farm stands in harmony with nature. Paradise Creek meanders through the property, adding a touch of delight and a ton of bird life.

The towns of Victor and Driggs are each about 15 minutes drive, and it’s only 23 miles to Grand Targhee Ski Resort & 35 miles to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Outdoor recreation is what drew us to the Tetons – our dream: snowkite out the front door, and backcountry ski from the back door. I think we can do it this winter while the building project is paused…

Reviving the Past, Building the Future

Back to the farmhouse. …As the proud third owners after Burton Kunz and his wife Leitha Kunz, we felt an instant connection to the adorable little house. When we stumbled upon it one frozen February morning, it had been vacant for two years, sold twice then taken back by the bank. Passed up by many previous lookers because of the amount of work it would take, we had the vision. Pete knew he could get it back to life. So, with enthusiasm and hard work, we set out to restore its simple functional beauty.

Months of Care and Dedication

Months of work turned into a labor of love as we breathed new life into the farmhouse’s aged framework. Every torn up carpet, creaking floorboard and weathered beam whispered stories of times gone by. We found newspapers from the 40s in the walls (and not much insulation.) A previous owner came over and showed us the bullet hole in the living room floor from when her husband was cleaning it with live ammo in it by mistake. With a fresh coat of paint both inside and out, and careful repairs, we revived this tiny slice of Teton Valley agricultural family history.

A Great Rental & Now a Cozy Temporary Home

For the past decade, the Farmhouse has been a cozy rental home for many families in Teton Valley. We’ve popped in from time to time – between renters – to do project. First we replaced the basement drainage system that had failed. Then it was a summer project to update the original septic system with a modern one. Now it’s our temporary home base where we’ll live for the next two years during the months we’ll be doing the Silo Home build. We’ve got room – come visit!

And the Journey Shall Continue….

Our journey with this awesome little Farmhouse endures, we love owning it, and honoring its history while providing housing to hardworking Teton Valley folks. It will be great to find a cool family to rent it again full time once we’re in the Silo Home across the driveway. We’re honored to celebrate the Kunz family legacy and embrace the spirit of this beloved family home.
