FROM SNOWY ARRIVAL WITH MOOSE TO A GRAIN BIN AUCTION ADVENTURE

INTRODUCTION: SILO HOME

This Spring – 2023 – we embarked on the journey to transform the two 1950’s grain bins on our Tetons property into a cozy Double Silo home, and we’re excited to share the experience with you all – filled with adventures, heartwarming moments, and unexpected surprises.

This blog post recounts some of the early moments of our journey, from setting up the existing farmhouse to sourcing a unique grain bin for our future home build.

SNOW-COVERED BEGINNINGS

Arriving in April, we were welcomed to Teton Valley by blankets of snow.

With excitement, we were ready to make our farmhouse – which has been a great rental investment property for the last 10 years – into our temporary abode while we build the Double Silo House. The farmhouse, built in the 1940s, holds stories of generations past, belonging to this corner of Teton Valley’s original settler, Mr. Samuel Kunz from Switzerland. With the help of our generous family and friends, the house came alive as donated furniture found its place, creating a cozy and comfortable space for us to call home.

EMBRACING NATURE & COEXISTING WITH WILDLIFE

Double Silo is not only about building a home; it’s also about connecting with the awesome nature around us. Eager to coexist with the local wildlife, we used the time waiting for the snow to melt to remove a large section unused fencing on our property near Paradise Creek. This small act of kindness opens up opportunities for wildlife to roam freely, and we were rewarded with spectacular moose sightings in our very own yard.

A GRAIN BIN ADVENTURE

As our plans for the farmhouse took shape, we knew that a unique addition would enhance its charm. Enter the additional 14 foot Butler grain bin – a rare gem we found at an auction for a mere $500. The only catch was its location – Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Without hesitation, Pete embarked us on a grain bin road trip adventure, making the journey to bring this treasure home. Our excitement soared as we envisioned the stylish look of our “living room silo” with a storage loft, elevated to new heights with the addition of this repurposed hardworking farm structure.

LOOKING AHEAD

With building permit in hand, we’re excited to revive this website and share our process. Using antique metal grain bins for our home in Tetons will hopefully inspire you to get creative on your own projects
